Click here to read CAMH’s response to the Recommendation of the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to Indefinitely Delay the Inclusion of Mental Illness as a Sole Underlying Condition for MAiD
In February 2024, the federal government passed legislation delaying the implementation of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) for people whose only underlying medical condition is a mental illness until March 2027. As part of the decision to delay, a Special Joint Committee of the House and Senate was recently re-established to complete a comprehensive review on MAiD eligibility for people with mental illness as their only medical condition. CAMH’s submission reinforces our concern about the expansion of MAiD to people with mental illness as their only medical condition and recommends further delay. In addition, see Dr. Allison Crawford’s, Chief Medical Officer for the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline, testimony to a Special Joint Committee of the House and Senate, who echoes CAMH’s position.
